Georgia Elowise Hutchinson Anderson, aged 94, died peacefully on Saturday, November 19, 2022 in Matthews, NC. Born in the Floyd’s Township of Horry County, Nichols, SC on October 19, 1928, Elowise was a daughter of the late George Layton Hutchinson and Helen Valva Gerrald Hutchinson of Nichols, SC.
Elowise graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1949 from the Medical University of South Carolina and Roper Hospital and met her husband, Jenks, in Charleston. During her nursing career, Elowise worked at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Atrium Health CMC) as well as in a local dermatology office. In 2013 she was honored at Presbyterian Hospital for 37 years of weekly volunteer service in the Coronary and Intensive Care waiting room, being thanked for 3,798.11 hours serving as a listening ear and support for patient’s families. Both her vocation and avocation were taking care of others, and she delighted in helping neighbors in need at Matthews Glen.
She was a skilled gardener and excelled at arranging flowers, having had her first garden as a child using cuttings from her beloved mother’s flower garden. Elowise enjoyed sewing, handwriting letters and cards to friends and family, and extensive traveling with her husband. She was a faithful member of Providence United Methodist Church and remained active in the Christian Home Sunday school class. She loved music and sang harmony with her sister Zoe as the Hutchinson Sisters in high school. Elowise was devoted to her family and demonstrated a lifelong commitment to fostering health for herself and others.
Elowise is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 72 years, Swinton Jenkins ‘Jenks’ Anderson, and siblings Corinne Stubbs, Genair Hutchinson, Izora Marlowe, George Hutchinson, and Roger Hutchinson.
She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Anderson of Asheville and Deborah Wooden of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Mansfield of Asheville, Susan Walsh (Dónal) of Charlotte, Katherine Cutspec (Josh) of Asheville, and David Wooden of Raleigh; two great-grandchildren Aidan and Allison Walsh of Charlotte; two sisters Miriam Hovis of Murrells Inlet, SC and Rebecca Taylor of Perrysburg, OH, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Her family will hold a Memorial Service on Friday, December 2, 2022, at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.
