Mrs. Lowder, age 87, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Elmcroft Assisted Living of Little Avenue. During her long battle with Alzheimers dementia, “Momma Mae” remained sweet, loving, and gracious. She loved her family, many friends, children and music, was an accomplished pianist who especially enjoyed singing hymns. After her husband (now deceased), Rev. John Lowder retired from the Western North Carolina United Methodist Conference in 1986, Mae and John moved back to Charlotte to be near children and grandchildren. Here Mrs. Lowder became an active member Central United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Born June 21, 1923 in Pleasant Garden, N.C. Mrs. Lowder was a daughter of the late Wade Benson Kearns and Ailene Lamb Kearns. Survivors include three sons and daughters- in-law, Wade (wife Ellen), Sam (wife Ann) and James; five grandchildren, Shelley, Todd (wife Heidi) and John (wife Katy) of Charlotte and Drew and Abbie of Winston Salem; two great grandchildren, Chloe and Thomas of Charlotte; and sisters, Mrs. Maude Dymond (her twin) and Mrs. Nancy Garrett of Pleasant Garden and Mrs. Gladys “Happy” Teague of Raleigh and several neices and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Lowder was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia Jane Lowder, brother W.C Kearns, and sisters, Mrs. Mary Johnson and Mrs. Eugenia Kirkman.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ella Mae Kearns Lowder will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Angela Pleasants, officiating. Burial will be private. The family will greet friends following the worship service.
