Earl Melvin “Mel” Rogers, formerly of Charlotte, NC and formerly of Chattanooga, TN, died August 1, 2018 at the age of 91 in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was born in Chattanooga, TN, on March 4, 1927. Mel was one of nine children born to Audrey Earl Rogers and Agnes Mae Price Rogers, who predeceased him.
While at Chattanooga’s Central High School where he graduated in 1945, he lettered in varsity baseball every year. Mel met the love of his life, Betty Braziel Rogers, while playing in the high school’s band, they were married for 72 years. The day after he graduated high school, he entered the US Army Air Force to fight in WWII.
Mel worked for TVA in Chattanooga, TN, in data processing until July of 1965. Betty and he relocated their family to Charlotte, NC, where he worked for J.P. Stevens & Co. and later for the Boy Scouts of America at their distribution warehouse where he was the Office Manager. He retired from BSA in 1994. While in retirement, he worked part-time for ADESA Auto Auction in Charlotte, NC, until a heart attack put an end to his days of employment. His hobbies were gardening, anything that required the use of a saw, hammer and nails and watching his beloved Atlanta Braves, Alabama football and Mississippi State baseball.
Mel is predeceased by his wife Betty, infant son Robert Larry Rogers, daughter Gloria Hamilton, granddaughter Tina South, brothers Jim Ben Rogers and Harold Rogers and sisters Virginia Tate, and Earlene Lynn.
Mel is survived by his sons Rick Rogers (Beverly) of Murrells Inlet, SC and Gary Rogers (Amy) of Tuscaloosa, AL; six grandchildren – Kimberly West, Melissa Gagne (Luke), Jason Jarrett (Michele), Chandler Rogers, Benjamin Japha (Vicki), Hannah Rogers, eight great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, his sisters Evelyn Humble and Janis Gill and his brothers Rex Rogers and Eslie Rogers (Carolyn).
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at 11:00 am at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 prior to the service. Please, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203.
