Dottie graduated from her beloved Tech High School in 1948. She began her lifelong career in music as an assistant church organist at age 13, and then at age 16, began as a church organist for 66 years at Allen Street Baptist, Plaza Baptist, Shamrock Drive Baptist and Green Memorial Baptist churches. God truly blessed her with a talent for both piano and organ, and she desired to honor HIM above all. Dottie was also organist at a local funeral home for 41 years, as well as played the piano in the lobby of both Presbyterian Main and Matthews Hospitals for numerous years. Through many services, including weddings and funerals, she played in over 50 churches, with one being the First Baptist Nazarette Church in Israel. Dottie was secretary for the vice president of Steam Production for twelve years at Duke Power. She and her husband founded and operated Smith Electric of Charlotte for 40 years.
On December 26, 1959, Dottie met the love of her life, Billy Earl Smith, and they were married the following November 6, 1960. One year later she gave birth to their first child, David, and then 18 months later to their daughter, Laura.
Dottie was known for her love of greeting cards, where she remembered multitudes of family and friends’ birthdays, anniversaries and any special occasion. These greeting cards led her to a love of collecting hundreds of Betsy Clark and Precious Moments figures.
Dottie is survived by her husband, Bill; her son, David and his wife, Crystal; and her daughter, Laura and her husband, Phil Prince. She relished being “Gran-Gran” to Joshua Prince, Jonathan Smith, Jordan Prince, Jeremy Smith, Jacob Prince, Hannah Prince and Mary Martha Prince. She is also survived by her brothers, John Faulk (Barbara) of Hickory and Ralph Faulk of Charlotte, her sister-in-law, Bettie Faulk of Pineville, her many beloved nieces and nephews, and special sisters of the heart, Jatana Bremmer, Carol Ketchie and Hannah Smith. She was predeceased in death by her parents, an infant brother, David Faulk, her sister, Martha Faulk, and her brother, Rev. Dr. J. Grady Faulk.
Her family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 10 at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, and for one hour prior to the service at Green Memorial Baptist Church, 1324 The Plaza in Charlotte. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 11, at Green Memorial Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
The family is incredibly thankful to the new friends at Willow Grove Retirement Community, the doctors that watched over her this last year, the staff of Carillon Assisted Living of Indian Trail for the last seven months, and Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region these last few weeks for the loving care that she received.
