Doris McKinney, of Lancaster, SC, passed peacefully on April 9th, 2016 at the age of 71 surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Richard McKinney of Charlotte, NC as well as her father Joseph Mitchum of Rock Hill, SC.
Doris is survived by her four children; Kimberly Van Cour, Alethea McKinney, Julia McKinney and Richard McKinney as well as their significant others Vincent Van Cour, Michael Schneider, Tim Kessler and Ashley McKinney, all of whom Doris accepted and loved as her own, much like the grandchildren she loved dearly – Lauren Weir and husband Casey Weir, Samantha Martin, Robin Towery and Ariana Shelton. In addition, Doris is survived by her mother, Floyce “Evelyn” Mitchum, and siblings Dan Mitchum, sister-in-law Harriett Mitchum, Debbie Wieland and brother-in-law Ray Wieland.
Although she was born in Moncks Corner, SC on March 14th, 1945, Doris moved with her family to the Rock Hill area and eventually even further North into Charlotte to attend Kings College. It was during this time that she met and fell in love with Richard McKinney. Doris was a devoted wife, a loving mother and an adoring grandmother. She was always a woman of great faith and found fulfillment being active in the church and in bible study.
Those who personally knew her recognized her for her strength and perseverance after enduring and overcoming numerous tribulations, most notably; surviving polio which altered her life forever, gaining the right to a public education, starting a family after a series of health complications despite the odds of success, and losing her husband more than 10 years ago.
A memorial service will be held for Doris on Friday April 15th, 2016 at 3pm at Covenant Baptist Church in Lancaster, SC. Visitation will precede the memorial service from 2-3pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region or to the charity of your choice.
