Born July 1930 in Thurmont, MD, she was the daughter to Roy and Evelyn Whitmore. She graduated from Bayside (Queens) High School and went on to be a clothing buyer in NYC. Doris married John Marshall Dean Jr. of Orange, NJ in April 1954 and went on to have four boys, John Marshall III, Robert, William, and David. While Livingston, New Jersey was their primary residence, they spent a couple years in Nahant, MA while Marshall was working on the Callahan Tunnel in Boston. She was very active with the boys’ activities, being President of the local school PTA, Little League baseball and the Cub Scouts. When her children were older, she worked for the Livingston Board of Education where she went on to be the Director of Transportation. They moved to Charlotte in 2004 to be more centrally located to her boys who had spread out along the east coast.
Doris was a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family and her friends. The joys of Doris’ life were her family and close Livingston and Charlotte friends, Broadway musicals, sports, including the Red Sox and the Celtics, college basketball, horse racing and hockey, as well as traveling throughout the US with Marshall. The family loved the Jersey shore and spent many summers in Beach Haven, NJ. After the boys married, Doris and Marshall could always be found at the grandchildren’s school and sporting events, including the mandatory ice cream treats afterwards.
Doris is survived by her four boys, Marshall (Barbara), Bob (Karen), Bill (Dana) and David (Jamie), eight grandchildren (Kimberly, Bobby, Michelle, Billy, Kevin, Kelly, AJ and Jackson) and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by five nieces (Vanessa, Linda, Debbie, Linda, and Diana) and one nephew (Rick). Doris was preceded in death by her husband Marshall, her brother Roy Jr., and his wife Susan, her brother-in-law Rob and his wife Marilyn.
A service to celebrate her life will be held in NJ sometime in the fall.
