Donna Godfrey Seeley

Donna Godfrey Seeley went home very peacefully to be with our Lord due to Alzheimer’s disease on August 29, 2023. Donna was the daughter of the late Thomas H. Godfrey, and Robbie King Godfrey Whisnant, granddaughter of the late Mac & Grace King. Donna was preceded in death by her brother Thomas H. Godfrey Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years Edgar Seeley III, sons Edgar Seeley IV of Indian Trail, NC, Shawn Seeley of Goodyear, AZ, daughter-in-law Jennafer Seeley and grandchildren Christina Seeley and Eddie Seeley V, both of Indian Trail. Donna is also survived by her 99 year old stepfather Murphy E. Whisnant, Jr. of Charlotte, as well as nephews and their families.

Donna lived in the Dilworth area of Charlotte on Templeton Avenue. She attended Dilworth Elementary then AG Middle School. Donna was a member of the last graduating class of the old Central High School in Charlotte in 1959. She loved dancing, especially jitterbugging. Her classmates voted her their best female dancer and the most friendly person in the class. She remained very close with many of her elementary and high school friends for more than 70+ years, especially Maggie Smith Jones who was her longest lifelong friend.

Donna graduated from Appalachian State in 1963 with a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Library Science. She loved teaching, and taught second graders at Barringer Elementary School in Charlotte for three years before she got married. She went back to App State for three summers, and only needed two more courses to complete her Master’s Degree.

While in college she met the love of her life, and soul mate, Edgar Seeley III of Venice FL. They were married in 1966 in Charlotte. Donna worked as a reference librarian at the University of Wyoming for two years while Ed completed his engineering degree there. They lived in five different states during the course of Ed’s career as an Air Force officer and Lockheed Martin engineer. They spent 35 years in Colorado before returning to Charlotte to retire in 2010.

Donna had a heart of gold with an outgoing and very friendly personality. She loved the Lord from a very early age. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, relentlessly loyal and committed to her loved ones. Donna valued quality time with her family more than anything. She never met a stranger and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She was a member of Calvary Church of Charlotte since 2011.

The family will greet friends starting at 11:30am on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road. A celebration of life service will begin at 12:30pm. Donna will be laid to rest, close to six generations of her ancestors, following an interment service at the Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery on Beatties Ford Road in Charlotte. Both services will be officiated by Pastor Jim Pile from Calvary Church Charlotte.
