He was born in Union County on March 3, 1930. Donald graduated from Tech High School.
Donald was married to Peggy Helms the love of his life for 68 years. He found great pride and joy in their children, 4 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. He enjoyed the simple things in life, like fishing at the beach, times with his church family and friends, gardening, and using his woodworking skills to help others.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth R. Helms and sister, Clara Helms Thompson.
He is survived by his wife Peggy; daughter, Donna Helms Cox, son in law Greg Cox; daughter in law Shirley Helms Stilwell, grandchildren, Grant and Rosalyn Cox, Nicholas and Samantha Helms, Sarah and Tommy Miller, and Beth and Alex Helms.
A visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 2:00pm on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 2817 Mt. Harmony Church Rd, Matthews NC. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 2:00pm.
Burial will take place in Mt. Harmony Church Cemetery.
