David graduated in 1970 from Massanutten Military Academy, Woodstock, VA, where he was the class photographer. He also attended the University of Tennessee and Pfeiffer College. He enjoyed attending rock shows with his sister, Katie, especially the Rolling Stones, and more recently, when the Stones were in Raleigh last July. David was a staunch UNC Tar Heels and Carolina Panthers fan. He worked in the retail paint industry until his early retirement in 2010.
He enjoyed reading and literature and had a wide range of interests, including history, the Civil War and science fiction. David also loved to swim with his grandchildren.
David is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kathryn Kern Willis; father, Floyd Willis, Jr.; step-children, Bobby (Michelle) Rigney and Noel (Mark) Darvill; and grandchildren, Davis and Grayson Darvill, and Abby, Robby, Lindsay and Will Rigney. Also surviving are his sister, Catherine "Katie" Cochran; nephews, Keith and Corey (Rebecca) Cochran; and niece, Amanda Cochran.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Friday, April 1 in Harry & Bryant's Chapel, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service.
