David was born in Charlotte, NC on February 12, 1949. As a child, he was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. He graduated from Myers Park High School in Charlotte and earned a degree in History from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He also studied at the Graduate School of Oceanography in Rhode Island. Dr. Lawing earned his PhD in Physics from North Carolina State University.
After working for the US Government at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for several years, he moved to Macon, GA to teach Physics at Macon State College (later Middle Georgia State University.) He taught there until his retirement. David enjoyed walking, running, and bicycling. He will be remembered for his wide range of knowledge about a variety of subjects.
David was preceded in death by his father, William Dennis Lawing, mother Louise Cook Lawing, brother Donald Ivey Lawing, and sisters, Anne Lawing Cook and Dorothy Lawing Schnabel, and a nephew, William Dennis Lawing III.
He is survived by a brother, William Dennis Lawing, Jr., a sister, Martha Lawing Robinson, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Navicent Health Center, Macon, GA physicians and nurses and the Pine Pointe Hospice of Macon, GA for their dedicated care of David.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 200 West Trade Street, Charlotte, NC 28202; Calvary Baptist Church, 5046 Fulton Mill Road, Macon-Bibb County, GA; or to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon-Bibb County, GA.
He will be buried in Charlotte, NC as per his wishes. The funeral is Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 with the Reverend Joan Watson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held in Macon, GA at a later date and will be announced in The Telegraph Newspaper, Macon, GA.
