Curtis J. Nolen Sr.

Curtis James Nolen, Sr. age 92 of Charlotte passed away August 20, 2012. A Memorial service with Masonic Rites will be at 2:00PM Saturday in the chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, Reverends Jim Aldridge and Tom Huntsinger officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home. Curtis Nolen, Sr. has gone by many names in his lifetime, Curt, Dad, PawPaw, “John” and PawPaw Curt to family and friends. He leaves a legacy that goes beyond his name. Mr. Nolen was born in Randolph County, Alabama January 21, 1920 son of the late James Richard and Frances Whitley Nolen. He loved to fish, garden, oil paint, woodwork and collect. He was constantly making friends and offering help to those that needed it. These are the legacies he leaves behind for us. Mr. Nolen came to Charlotte in the late 30’s installing boilers in dry cleaners, bread companies and mills. He went to work with Esso working on oil burners in Charlotte and then Raleigh, NC. He owned his own oil company (Esso Distributor) Friendly Oil and Burner Service. He later went to work for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Building Standards as a Mechanical Inspector. Mr. Nolen was a member of Thrift United Methodist Church over 50 years, served in the US Navy during WW II, and was a member of Steele Creek Masonic Lodge #737. He is survived by a son, Jim Nolen and friend, Barbara, grandchildren, Dink Nolen (Fran Wilbourn) and children, Oscar and Cesar, Wes Nolen (Noelle) and children, Maggie and Max, Rene’ Huntsinger (Tom) and children, Kelsey and Molly Mains, Robin, Hope and Hannah Huntsinger and his close companion for the past eight years, Margaret Harkey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Louise C.. Nolen, brothers Slim and Harmon, sisters, Burt, Emily, and Bernice.
