Charlotte - Corinne Hammond Evans, 96, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2018 at Plantation Estates, her home for five years. She is survived by children, George Evans Jr. (Christian), of New Bern, Brian Evans (Mary Lee) of Edisto Island, South Carolina, and Diane Evans of Charlotte; grandchildren, Catherine Knott (Jason), David Evans (fiancée Laura Tillistrand), Alison Evans, Paul Evans (Jessica), and Hannah Krug (significant other Nick Morrisey); five great-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews; and her sister, Wayne Mader of Nashville, Tennessee. She was predeceased by her parents, Harold Wayne and Norma York Hammond; her husband of 54 years, George Evans; and her sister, Norma Harmon.
Corinne was born in Carlinville, Illinois in 1922, and spent her early years in Chicago. In 1933, her family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she met George. After attending Union College for two years, Corinne and George were married in 1943 in Arcadia, Florida, where he was stationed. In 1954 the family moved to Raleigh, and in 1961, to the Stonehaven neighborhood in Charlotte.
In addition to raising children, she was a frequent volunteer at Providence United Methodist Church, the Red Cross, and the Republican Women, and later employed by Red Cross. Corinne was an excellent gardener, and in later years, became a skilled painter.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 25, in the chapel of Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service in the atrium of the church. Interment is private for the family.
Memorials in Corinne's memory may be made to Providence United Methodist Church or the American Red Cross.
