Born in San Antonio, TX, he was a son of the late Aaron and Gloria Shaner Smith. Mr. Smith was retired from the U.S. Navy following 20 years of service. He spent 23 years in NASCAR with Darrell Waltrip and his later life serving as Papaw.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Charlene Menear (David); a son, William Moose; two grandchildren, Justin Menear and Kayce Moose; a sister, Sharon Dumph; two brothers-in-law, Mike Wingate (Cynthia) and Jeff Wingate; a sister-in-law, Sherrie Cannon (Charles); seven nieces and nephews, Christopher Wingate, Taylor Wingate, Charles Cannon, III, William Cannon, Douglas Cannon, Sarah Cannon and Jeffery Cannon; and many aunts and cousins in San Antonio, TX as well as California family.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 29, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208 with burial to follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends on Friday from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service.
