Charlotte Ann Matthews Hunter (age 89) of Plantation Estates died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Plantation Estates.
Born on December 31, 1922 in Baltimore, MD, Mrs. Hunter was the daughter of the late Harry Matthews and Margaret Ruth Matthews. She was a graduate of St. Jerome's Business School in Baltimore, where she was the first and only protestant young woman to graduate from this Catholic school. She was first employed by the Harms Co., inventors of the Glow Starter fluorescent light. Following this, she was an employee of the B. & O. Railroad in the Car Service Division. In 1944 she married Loyd Dale Hunter, and his work brought them to the city of Charlotte in 1951.
A life-long Lutheran, Charlotte was the first president of the women's group in her church in Amarillo, TX. In Charlotte, she was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church for over 50 years, where she taught Sunday School, was the first superintendent of the Weekday Church School, served as treasurer of her circle, was a member of the Altar Guild and of the Agape Sunday School class.
Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Dale Hunter, and two brothers, Charles and James.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Ann Thomas of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren, Kara Elizabeth Mellott and Travis Hunter Mellott and his wife Michelle, both of Raleigh; four great-granchildren, Logan Dale Wood, Rebecca Katherine Duke, Hunter Owen Mellott, and Ethan Loyd Mellott; six Godchildren; and nine children bearing her name. There is also a surviving sister, Charlotte M. Jarzynski and a sister-in-law, Joyce M. Mewshaw.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Harry & Bryant. A funeral service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012, with Rev. Dr. Peter Brown and Pastor Emily Hartner officiating.
