Mr. Merritt retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. He was a World War II veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of New Hope Christian Church in Winston-Salem, NC.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Dorothy of Mint Hill; his three daughters, Lynda Merritt and Denise Merritt of Mint Hill, and Patricia Jolly of Charlotte; his four siblings, Frances Hayes and Lawrence “Buck” Merritt, Jr., and wife, Lois, all of Winston-Salem, NC, William Merritt and wife, Peggy, of Kernersville, NC, and Barbara Griggs and husband, Garland, of Winston-Salem, NC; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a loving husband, Daddy, Grandpa, Brother, and Uncle. He was a true friend to those who were fortunate to have him as a friend. He had the singing voice of an angel and in his younger years, sang with various gospel quartets. The thing he looked most forward to was watching the Braves baseball games, as he was one of the most avid and dedicated fans.
His family will receive friends on Saturday, March 19, 2011, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at McEwen-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC, immediately followed by his funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mint Hill Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 23065, Mint Hill, NC 28227-0272.
