Mr. Elder, age 97, of Charlotte, a resident of Carriage Club, died of melanoma on his birthday. Born June 13, 1915 in Greensboro, he was the son of the late Frankie Carter Elder and Charlie Crofford Elder. Mr. Elder attended Greensboro public schools, graduating from Greensboro Senior High School in 1933. He graduated from Davidson College in 1937 with a degree in business and economics. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and played on the first soccer team at Davidson. Mr. Elder worked for 40 years in the sales department of the Southern Railway in Greensboro, New York City, Lynchburg, Virginia, Durham and Raleigh. He was a 30-year member of Rotary International.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne Elder Greene and her husband, Joe, of Indian Trail; two grandsons, David and Andrew and a granddaughter, Joanna Greene; and six great grandchildren, Kasey, Jamie, Seth, Christopher, Carter and Joshua, all of whom live in the Charlotte area; and sister-in-law, Marion Rosser Trent and her husband, James, of the Richmond area. Additional survivors include a niece, Dona Carlson; nephews, Dwight Trent and Daryl Trent; and great nieces and nephews, Erin and Malin Carlson, Redding and Sarah Trent and Nicholas, Ryan and Grace Trent. In addition to his parents, Mr. Elder was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Rosser Elder of Lynchburg, Virginia.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, June 17th at Carriage Club. Interment will be at Spring Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Darlington Heights, Virginia.
