“Pete”
Charles Leslie Cruse, Sr., age 85, of Charlotte passed away peacefully Friday, March 22, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC.
He was born December 4, 1928 in Charlotte, North Carolina the son of the late Avery Parks Cruse and Hazel Luella Carpenter Cruse. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Parks Nalle Cruse and Sidney Lee Cruse.
Mr. Cruse served his country proudly in the United States Army as a Master Sergeant during the Korean War. He attended the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Schools, attended Central High School and graduated from Tech High School. With encouragement from Dr. Bonnie Cone he applied and was awarded the Hurst Scholarship and obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering from Duke University with Honors.
He retired from a long career with Duke Power now Duke Energy where he was the Head of Marketing in Durham, NC. He was president of the American Cancer Society in Durham, the Durham Tobaccoland Kiwanis Club, Charlotte Kiwanis Club, head of the Durham Duke Engineering Club, Charlotte Engineering Club, Elder and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Durham and head of the Durham Home Builders Club.
Pete was an avid golfer and could be found most weekends at the Cedarwood Country Club of Charlotte working on his golf game.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Mrs. Charles L. Cruse “Marie B.” of the home; son, Charles “Chuck” Leslie Cruse, Jr. and wife Cynthia Groeger Cruse; daughter, Julianna Marie Cruse Burgess and husband Jonathan Nesbit Burgess; sister, Miriam Ellen Cruse Gosnell; grandchildren; David and Michelle Cruse and Luke and Elyse Burgess; and numerous other loving family.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Green Memorial Baptist Church, 1324 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
