the son of Margaret and Lloyd Baker. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Gene was a square dance caller, golfer, woodworker, handyman, gardener and farmer.
In 1954, he graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and joined the Navy where
he was a Boilerman on the USS Strong. He married Betty in 1956 and they enjoyed
almost 60 years of marriage together.
He worked for Coca Cola after the Navy then went on to Rogers America Food brokers
and later owned a store fixture business called Carolina Berg until he retired.
Gene never met a stranger, was a fixture at Bojangles for breakfast and enjoyed the
"Breakfast Club," as well as had weekly golf outings with some of his closest friends. He
was a member of Metrolina Dancers Association Hall of Fame as well as the North
Carolina Federation of Square and Round Dance Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Anderson (Bill); granddaughter, Bailey Trotter
(Landon); and great grandson, Hayden.
Friends are invited to join the family at a visitation at Matthews United Methodist on
Tuesday at 10AM, with the service following at 11AM. 801 S Trade Street Matthews, NC
28105. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
The family would like to thank the staff of Cadence of Mint Hill for the exceptional care
during his stay at the end of his life.
