Calvin Eugene “Gene” Porter, 75, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on October 31, 2014. Born in Blacksburg, SC, Gene was the only son of Mary Jeannette and Calvin Odell “C.O.” Porter. Following graduation from Harding High School, Gene went on to serve in the US Air National Guard for two years and the Navy for twenty years. His second career included working for the Washburn Press briefly, then the Charlotte Observer for 18 years. An avid pet-lover, Gene was also known to enjoy boating, fishing and dancing. Survivors include daughter, Donna Piliero of Long Beach, CA; son, Kenny Porter of Charlotte, NC and Long Beach, CA; grandchildren, Michael Piliero, Tracy Piliero, Kristina Porter, Jason Storey Jr., and Ashley Storey; and longtime companion and best friend Gail Knox. The family will gather for a celebration of Gene’s life at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, November 4, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
