“BOBBY”
Bobby joined his heavenly family November 10, 2016, at the age of 91. Born July 12, 1925, he was proud to say he was a local Charlottean, raised in the Steele Creek community as were his parents and grandparents.
After working alongside his father on the family dairy farm and graduating from Berryhill School, Bobby enlisted in the Army. He proudly served during World War II with the 10th Mountain Division in Europe, primarily in Italy. He often credited his life to his typing skills and asthma as he was pulled from the front lines to serve in Corporate Headquarters. Upon returning home, Bobby soon began work with a company that later became Winchester Surgical Supply, retiring in 1981.
Bobby married his one true love, Ruth Ewart Byrum, and began raising his own family in Steele Creek. Being active in Steele Creek Presbyterian Church for his entire lifetime, Bobby faithfully served many roles in the church … Deacon, Elder, Bookkeeper, Youth Leader and Sunday School teacher, but his true love was the choir. He forever loved the music and his choir family.
If you ever had the opportunity to meet and know Bobby, you knew his fierce love of family, friends, church and community. Whether you are a childhood or family friend, a coworker, a church member, staff at his favorite restaurants, a neighbor, niece, nephew or cousin or some of the more recent folks that helped care for Bobby – you knew his kind spirit and sense of humor. He showered us all with his love, wit and caring and for that, we are forever grateful. When you miss Bobby as we all do, think of him with a smile in your heart.
Being predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2006, son Jim in 2008 and son Rob in 2015, Bobby will forever be loved by his family remaining … daughter Anne (Dave) Dillenbeck, daughters-in-law Sandy Byrum and Dixie Byrum, grandchildren Kevin, Stephanie, Craig, Mark, Charlotte (Aaron), Tina (Tom), three great grandchildren, and one great, great grandson.
Services for Bobby Byrum will be held Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will begin at 3:00pm, with a Celebration of Life, officiated by Dr. W. Jeff Pinkston in the sanctuary at 3:30pm, followed by fellowship and visitation in the Family Life Center.
