Mr. McGee was born in Denver, NC to the late Laddie Ray and Nellie Winecoff McGee. He was a World War II veteran having served in the 25th Army Division as a Staff Sergeant. Billie began a career with Exxon in 1947 and was a terminal foreman for many years until his retirement in 1982 after 35 years of service.
Following retirement, Mr. McGee enjoyed spending time with his family and his hobbies, farming, welding, hunting, and fishing. He also enjoyed fixing everything his family relied on. Billie was affectionately known as “Grin Grin” by his grandkids and his neighborhood kids. Billie was a charter member of A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church which celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2013 and where he was an Honorary Lifetime Member of Lutheran Men in Mission since 1984.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years as of December 23rd, Laura Rice McGee; son, James McGee and wife, Barbara; grandchildren, Alyssa M. Thomas and husband, Wayne; Greg McGee and wife, Suzie; great grandchildren, Raegan and Masden Thomas and Christopher and Katie McGee; brother, Paul McGee; sisters, Helen Gordon and Ruth Webb; he is preceded in death by a brother, Keith McGee and Son, Gary Edwin. Billie will truly be missed by his family and friends.
Visitation for Mr. McGee will be held from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 30, 2013 at A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church, 8200 McClure Circle, Charlotte, NC 28216 with a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Committal will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208. Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service is serving the McGee family.
In Lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the Building Fund of A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
