Mrs. Kerley, 86, died at home on Wednesday July 18, 2012. She was born in Charlotte, NC on December 20, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Forney Oscar Poovey and Helen Kerr Poovey. She was a graduate of Oakhurst High School.
Betty married Richard Kerley in 1942 and had two daughters, Dawn Kerley Ehle of Fayetteville, NC and Lynn Kerley Beckner of Charlotte. She was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church since 1961, where she taught 3 year old and 3rd grade Sunday School for over 30 years, and she was President of the Friendship Sunday School Class. In addition, she began a widows’ group later known as the Uptown Ladies after the death of her beloved husband. She volunteered in the Chaplain’s office at Presbyterian Hospital for over 25 years. She was a beloved mother, not only to her own children but also her sister, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and many of their friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Baptist Church on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service in Broach Hall.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Dawn Ehle and her husband Ellis of Fayetteville, NC and Lynn Beckner and her late husband Ken of Charlotte, NC; two granddaughters, Wendy Lyn (sons Phillip and Christopher) of Fayetteville and Meghan Beckner of Wilmington, NC; and one grandson, Gary Green, Jr. and his wife Cheryl of California; one sister, Beverly Oxendine and her husband Levern of Charlotte; and one brother, Dr. Harry Poovey and his wife Vivian of Monroe; and many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard, and her sisters, Margaret Hefner and Yonnie Howie, and great-grandson, Michael Green.
