Betty Jean Overcash Hunter, 90, of Charlotte, died September 5, 2023. She was born on December 17,1932 in Mecklenburg County to the late Archie H. And Mabel Broome Overcash. She is preceded in death by her husband, Warren B. Hunter and sisters, June Overcash Abernethy and Helen Overcash.
Betty Jean, affectionately known by “Stretch” because of how fast she could walk, lived a full and meaningful life. She graduated from Derita High School in 1951; was voted the “friendliest” in her senior year because she could make friends so easily. She stayed in touch with many of these friends over the years as a key organizer for many high school reunions.
During her life, Betty Jean cared for several elderly relatives and also had a great love for animals. She didn’t want anyone or any animal to be hungry if she could help it. She was a Derita Precinct Democratic Judge and then Chief Judge for many years, and a housekeeper for ServiceMaster Commercial Services for sixteen years. She was very involved in her beloved church, Sugaw Creek Presbyterian, since 1957.
She and her husband Warren were longtime members of the Queen City A-model club and loved traveling. She enjoyed camping, crafts, cooking, antiquing, entertaining, and especially decorating for Christmas. Her home was always a warm and welcoming place, but she especially loved entertaining during the holidays. She made Easter baskets every year for her grand nieces and nephews, playing the Easter bunny anonymously for many years.
We, her family, called her Aunt Stretch, but she was also a “bonus” mother and grandmother, always supporting, encouraging, being involved in the lives of her family and being present at family events. Her laughter was infectious, she loved boldly, she gave generously of herself, and we will miss her presence so much.
Survivors include her nephews and nieces: Jeff Abernethy (Kim) of Salisbury, Tommy Abernethy (Melanie) of Concord, Jan Roland (Brent) of Graham, NC, and Renee Furman (David) of Locust; nine great nieces and nephews Michelle (Frank), Stefanie (Jason), Chad, Kyle (Tori), Lauren (Ben), Brooke (Barrett), Kurt (Bryce), Cam and Alexa; and fourteen great grand nieces and nephews: Layna, Elyse, Noah, Jasper, Josie, Avery, Olivia, Dawson, Banks, Salem, Darcie, Henley, Anders and Graham.
The funeral will be a graveside service held at 3 pm on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC. Visitation with family will be held immediately following the service.
Donations may be made in Betty's memory to either Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church or to The Humane Society.
