Betty McPhetridge Acuff

Mrs. Acuff, 90, of Charlotte, NC went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 6, 2017. She was born April 16, 1927 in Fountain City, Tennessee, the youngest daughter of Charles Otis McPhetridge abd Etta Walker McPhetridge Tindell. She attended Knoxville High School where she met Clifford E. Acuff. They married in September 1943.

Following World War II, Cliff and Betty, and their growing family, lived all over the southeastern US while he worked for F.W. Woolworth, Co. They arrived in Charlotte, NC the summer of 1962. Betty initially worked at J.C. Penny’s Park Road store. Next she began a career at North Carolina National Bank where she became one of the first female branch managers. Retiring after 26 years as Vice-President and Manager of the downtown headquarters branch of NCNB. Following her retirement she completed her GED.

Betty and Cliff joined Providence Baptist Church upon arrival in Charlotte and then became charter members of Carmel Baptist Church in the fall of 1965. Betty served as a teacher in the elementary and youth programs and also on several pastoral search committees. More recently she served as a volunteer at The Shepard’s Center leading tours and assisting during tax season.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Clifford Acuff; two sons, Clifford E. Acuff, Jr., and Michael Robert Acuff; her siblings, Mildred Hopkins, Bobbie Huffman, Georgia Altom, Imogene Boyles, Ralph McPhetridge, Herbert McPhetridge, John Alexander McPhetridge and Edith Kermit McPhetridge. Betty leaves three sons and daughters-in-law: Steve and Anne Acuff of Columbia, SC, Mark and Elizabeth Acuff of Chapel Hill, NC and Phillip and Rhonda Acuff of Atlanta, GA, along with 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Carmel Baptist Church, 1145 Pineville-Matthews Rd., Matthews, NC 28105. The family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Corner to Corner Ministries, 812 North 5th Street, Nashville, TN 37207.
