Bernice, “Bernie”, Fiss of Charlotte, NC, passed away on January 30, 2011 at Carrington Place Nursing Home in Matthews, NC.
Bernice was born on April 14, 1921 in Darlington County, SC to the late Cecil Sansbury and Floy Jordan Sansbury. She was a graduate of Coker College and Winthrop College. Bernice served as a Navy WAVE during World War II in aviation support. After the war, Bernie settled in Charlotte and married Edward Fiss. Together they raised 5 children; Ned, Linda, Fred, Billy and Bette. Bernice was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, where she also worked in the office. Bernice was an avid bridge player.
Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ed, and 10 siblings – 6 brothers and 4 sisters. She is survived by her children, Ned Fiss and wife Cindy, Linda Van Ham and husband Bob, Fred Fiss and wife Emma, Billy Fiss, and Bette Frederick and husband Jerry; her grandchildren, Melissa Seidman and husband Mark, Matt Fiss and wife Lauren, Rebecca Fiss, Lindsay Van Ham and fiancée Nick Toscano, Rob Van Ham, Jessie Frederick, Kit Frederick , Mackenzie Fiss, Anthony Fiss, Henry Fiss, Troy Fiss, Hannah Fiss and Zach Fiss; and her great-grandchildren, Ethan Fiss and Sophia Toscano.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011 at Harry & Bryant Company, “Chapel in the Oaks”, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. A private interment will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
