She was born in a farm house in Matthews, NC on 4/20/1910 and lived her entire life in Mecklenburg County. She graduated from Matthews High School in 1928. Annie was preceded in death by her husband James, plus 4 sisters and 5 brothers and her son-in-law.
Survivors include son David (wife Miriam) of Pineville, NC; daughter Lorinna Lowrance of Charlotte; 3 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and families.
Annie walked a mile to attend a one room school house until 4th grade. By 8th grade she and her younger brother were the only ones still in school and it was further away, so her father bought a pony and buggy for them to drive to school.
After graduation, Annie worked at Southern Bell Telegraph Co. until she married. When the children were in elementary school, Annie went to work as a sales clerk at Efird's department store, where she developed her sense of style. She had also been influenced by her mother, who was a “real dressed up lady” wearing hats and gloves everywhere. Annie was well known for her love of fashion and hobby of shopping. Annie was always colorfully “dressed to the nines” and fully accessorized with jewelry and scarves and such. She never wore a pair of tennis shoes and wore heels until she had to wear flats. Annie was always dressed like she was going somewhere nice, even if you dropped in on her, no matter the time of day or night.
Another activity Annie enjoyed was needlework, and she crocheted afghan throws and toboggan caps and many other gifts for family and friends over the years. She also enjoyed reading, and she had several bibles all of which were well used and full of notes and photos of loved ones.
Annie was very sociable. Most of her jobs involved being a switchboard operator and she enjoyed talking to people. She especially enjoyed gatherings with family and friends. She loved flowers and birds, bright colors, and desserts. She really loved to travel and was always up for a road trip, especially after she retired. Annie also did a lot of volunteer work.
Annie Wilson lived to be 112. We had started to think she would live forever, and actually she will, because she loved the Lord Jesus Christ and is with Him now, and we will see her again one fine day.
Annie’s family wishes to express special thanks to her loving caregiver, Priscilla Chola and Colleen Monday.
