She was born in Rockingham, NC into the family of Hattie May Leviner and James Walker Smith on July 10, 1924. Annie grew up in a loving, Christian family. She was close with her five sisters and two brothers. In addition to her parents and six of her siblings, Annie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Grady Franklin Campbell, and her son, James Larry Potter of Charleston, SC. Annie is survived by her daughters LaBruce Potter Kuck Neely of Charlotte, NC; Hattie Potter Zurbrick of Livonia, MI; Elaine (Dennis) Potter Williamson of Wilson, NC; and a son Robert (Connie) Potter of Athens, GA. In addition to her children, she is survived by her sister Orene Coward of Rockingham, NC, 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Annie’s love of learning led her back to school studying at the age of 30. She was a graduate of The American Business School in Chicago, IL and she has a Business Degree from Perry Business College, Brunswick, GA.
Annie made her home in Charleston, SC for a number of years where she raised her children as well as worked outside the home in various business jobs. She moved to Charlotte in 1965. She was hired by NCNB where she worked for 24 years before retiring from what is now, Bank of America. Following her retirement, from banking, she worked for Marsh Associates as Resident Manager for 12 years, a job she loved and enjoyed. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and a Sunday School member of the Christian Partners Class.
Annie was first a child of God, whom she served faithfully all her life. She will be remembered as a loving and caring sister and aunt, a devoted wife, a nurturing, loving Mother, proud Grandmother, adoring Great-Grandmother, and an extra special Great-Great Grandmother.
Annie would want us to remember the love and pride she had for her wonderful family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family! She loved playing Hymns on her piano and baking in her kitchen. The best memories will be of the wonderful family gatherings she enjoyed; especially the ones where 5 generations would be together. Our lives were so enriched by the humility, love and faithfulness she gently exemplified throughout her life. Faith and Family were at the center of her Life. She loved God and walked with him throughout her life and now she will walk with Him throughout eternity in Heaven. She was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She will be missed greatly.
A visitation followed by a memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 22 at 10am at the Gordon Weekly Chapel at Providence Baptist Church with Dr. Lee Canipe, officiating. Burial will be private. McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park is serving the family.
The family would like to thank Hospice Care of Union County for their wonderful, attentive care. The family request those who wish to express sympathy and celebrate Annie’s life to consider making a donation in her memory to Providence Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC to the Restore and Renew Campaign.
