Charlotte – Mrs. Cook, 83, passed away on September 20, 2016 at Novant Health Matthews Hospice. She was born on January 12, 1933 in Charlotte, a daughter of the late Jessie Louise Cook Lawing and William Dennis Lawing; and beloved wife of her late husband, John Rawlinson Cook.
Following graduation from Central High School in Charlotte, Anne attended Woman’s College (now UNC Greensboro) where she studied bookkeeping. Early in her career, she worked in several industries. She worked for about 20 years at the Associated General Contractors (AGC) and then retired.
Anne was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Naomi circle. She served as the teacher one year in her circle, and she enjoyed musical events at the church.
While working at AGC, Anne became involved in the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC.) She previously served as Treasurer of NAWIC and was most recently in charge of contacting members prior to meetings. Previously, she was also involved in the Mint Museum and Golden Circle Theater.
Anne loved plays, movies, television, music, attending the Dilworth Tour of Homes every year, and traveling with NAWIC to annual conferences in places such as Louisville, Nashville, San Antonio, and Anaheim. Prior to her husband’s death, she traveled with him often to their lake home, the beaches of Florida, and the beaches of South Carolina.
She seldom agreed to do anything that would interfere with her activities, with a NAWIC meeting, or with plans to travel with her husband. Others’ schedules simply had to be worked around these things.
She is survived by a sister, Martha Robinson, and two brothers, Dennis Lawing (Nancy) and David Lawing, a brother-in-law (Richard Schnabel) and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, a brother (Donald Lawing), a sister (Dorothy Lawing Schnabel), a brother-in-law (Lee Robinson), a sister-in-law (Jean Lawing), and a nephew (Bill Lawing.)
Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 pm Sunday afternoon, September 25, 2016 at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, September 26, 2016 in the Morrison Chapel at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Joan Watson officiating. The family will also receive friends at 10 am, just prior to the service. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
