Born in Wadesboro, NC, Anna was the only child of Reese Blair Boylin and Jean Dowd Boylin. She was educated in the Anson County public schools, at Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, NC, the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma. The Boylin Family owned the M & I, Wadesboro's newspaper at that time, and from an early age Anna was steeped in a deep appreciation for reading and the news. Growing up, she enjoyed trips to Charlotte to visit with her mother's family, shop, and attend cultural events. Her fondest memories included time spent in Black Mountain, NC, at the summer home of her maternal grandfather, Jerome Dowd, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Oklahoma. She greatly enjoyed the wide variety of family and friends that would gather there in the summers, and the long conversations and pleasant times they shared. Anna was also an avid tennis player and loved to dance.
After college, Anna married architect J. A. Malcolm and settled in Charlotte. They were one of the three original couples who started Carmel Country Club in 1947. While raising her children, Anna taught Sunday School at Myers Park Methodist Church, where she was a member. Her adult hobbies included bridge, golf and world travel. Anna also enjoyed spending time at the beach with family and friends. She sold real estate and avidly followed the stock market. Her childhood love for reading and current events continued, and when macular degeneration took away her vision, she was brave and resolute in turning from reading her books to listening to them.
Anna was a long time member of the Mecklenburg Chapter of the D.A.R. and a double legacy Pi Phi. She always expressed great gratitude and deep appreciation for what a happy, charmed life she had lived and how very blessed she felt to have been born in the United States.
Left to honor her memory are a son, James Blair Malcolm and his wife, Elizabeth Mattox Malcolm (Charlotte, NC); daughter, Jean Marie (Dolly) Malcolm Kollias (Columbia, MO); grandchildren, James Blair Malcolm, Jr. (Charlotte, NC), Laura Brun Malcolm (Chapel Hill, NC), Elizabeth Dowd Malcolm (Charlotte, NC), Mark Andrew Kollias (Columbia, MO); Jennifer Arant Malcolm and her son, Colton Malcolm Davis (Myrtle Beach, SC). Mrs. Malcolm was predeceased by her loving husband, James Andrew Malcolm; a son, Francis Claude (Frank) Malcolm and his wife, Rita Arant Malcolm; and son-in-law, Lew Anthony Kollias.
The family wishes to especially thank Mrs. Malcolm's home care givers, Betty Jordan, Magda Smith, Michelle Walker and others who filled in from time to time.
Memorials may be made to Friendship Trays, 2401-A Distribution Street, Charlotte, NC, or charity of the donor's choice.
