Ann Everett Belk, 89, of Charlotte passed away at The Stewart Health Center at The Cypress of Charlotte on Sunday, February 5, 2017. Ann’s death was due to complications following a severe stroke in October; she now suffers no more and is in God’s Triumphant. Ann was married to the late Henderson Belk of Charlotte for 34 years and they had six children. Thomas Everett Belk, and wife Donna, of Charlotte; Paul Henderson Belk, and wife Cecelia, of Mount Airy; Cornelia Ann Belk, of Charlotte; James Herschel Belk, and wife Pam; Mary Belk Melton, and husband John, of Charlotte; and Margaret Belk Tierney, and husband Paul, of Weaverville all celebrate the resurrection of their lovely mother. Ann had 21 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was an unfailing example to her family and inspired the values of honesty, integrity, and compassion.
A native Charlottean, Ann graduated from Eastover School and Fassifern Schools for Girls in Hendersonville, NC. She attended Mary Baldwin and also The University of Miami at Coral Gables. She loved Florida, especially Naples, time at the Carolina coast and a summer home at Lake Wylie, NC. She also deeply loved the mountains and supported summer camps, even working later in life as a camp counselor, teaching weaving, at Camp Greystone in Tuxedo, NC. She actively supported Young Life Charlotte, and was a board member and helped found the original chapter.
Ann was very active in her community.
She served in many capacities at her church, Carmel Presbyterian, participating actively in the Amani Bead project, assisted in church beautification projects, and also served as a deacon. Prior to that, she was very involved with Myers Park Presbyterian Church and was a founding member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Later, she joined First Baptist Church in Charlotte and was an active member for many years. In midlife, Ann, with Henderson, were personally involved in the Billy Graham Evangelical Association and traveled extensively with the team around the world. She and Henderson also supported Wycliffe Bible Translators and had a personal relationship with Uncle Cam, founder, and Elaine Townsend, founder.
Ann loved art and was a member of the Mint Museum as well as supporting art therapies at the Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center’s Hemby Children’s hospital. Fittingly, she lived near the Mint Museum for many years and enjoyed painting, often taking a class or going to Penland School of Crafts to improve her skills.
Ann was a generous philanthropist, serving on the board of directors of The Herschel and Cornelia Everett Foundation. This trust has supported many educational and theological causes in the Charlotte area for many years, including UNC Charlotte, Queens University, Union Theological Seminary, Gordon Cornwell Theological Seminary, Leighton Ford Ministries, Wycliffe International and the Brookstone School, to name a few. She was involved in an area book club and was a life-long learner and lover of travel. She was profoundly kind. She was a faithful and beloved member of her community and will be missed by all who she touched.
Ann’s family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8th at Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 9th at Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Road. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 or to Young Life of Charlotte, 6707 Fairview Road, Suite A, Charlotte, NC 28210.
