Mrs. Pender, 75, of Charlotte, NC, passed away Monday, April 18, 2011. She was born on Davis Island, Tampa, Florida, on December 31, 1935. Mrs. Pender was the daughter of Walter Henderson Cotter and Regina Horn Cotter Oetinger, and the beloved wife of Doctor John Robert Pender III.
She was a native of Lake Wales, Florida, moving to Charlotte, NC, in 1953. She attended Salem Academy and graduated from Myers Park High School in 1954. Mrs. Pender graduated from Stephens College, Columbia, MO, and completed her art education at Parsons School of Design, New York City. She is well known for her portraits of animals and paintings of fly fisherman. Her work is in homes in fifteen states and abroad.
Mrs. Pender served on the Florence Crittenton Home Board, The Junior League of Charlotte Admission Board, was a board member and past president of the Charlotte Debutante Club, a member of the Mint Museum of Art Auxiliary Board, The Guild of Charlotte Artists Board, and the Charlotte Latin School Board of Visitors. She is a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, The Charlotte Country Club, North Carolina Museum of History, The Museum of the South, Charlotte Museum of History, Charlotte Art League, and the Mint Museum of Art.
Mrs. Pender was preceded in death by her husband, John on December 17, 2001. She is survived by her son, Dr. John Robert Pender IV, wife Dallas, and their children, Ellen and John of Greenville, NC; her daughter, Mary Pender McAlister, husband Dr. James Allen McAlister, Jr., and their son, Jimmy of Boone, NC; her daughter, Rogers Pender Hewitt, husband Thomas Gregory Hewitt of Camden, SC, and sons, Trey, John, and Brooks Williams; her daughter, Anne Pender Griffith, husband James Rudy Griffith, Jr., and sons, Jimmy, Tucker, and Pender of Charlotte; and beloved sister, Janie Cotter Choate, husband Fred Glover Choate, and sons, Beau and Mark of Devon, PA.
A Celebration of Amy's life will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church at 11 o'clock a.m. Thursday, April 21st, followed by a visitation in Providence Hall. Interment will be private.
Memorial gifts may be given to Florence Crittenton Home or the Humane Society of Charlotte.
