Born in Charlotte on June 24, 1929, Meechie was a daughter of Boyce Wilson Hunter and Marion Malone Hunter. She graduated from Central High School and the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. She taught Kindergarten and 1st Grade in Charlotte for 10 years before marrying Oliver F. (Bo) Roddey, Jr. Meechie and Bo started married life in Greensboro, NC, then moved to Boston, MA for eight years. They returned to Charlotte in 1970 and moved into the home where Meechie had grown up.
Meechie was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church where she was active on the Hospital Visitation Committee for many years, as well as an early member of a Regional Aids Interfaith Network team. She served as President of the Charlotte Assembly, was an avid supporter of Wing Haven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary, and was active in the Junior League, Myers Park Garden Club, and the Ladies of the Club Book Club. Meechie was an active volunteer at Charlotte Latin School while her children were students there.
Meechie gathered life-long friends every place she lived. Her support, devotion and love were constants in the lives of friends and family alike. She patiently provided a solid, reliable support system for her hyper-energetic husband and his broad range of interests. Meechie enjoyed the company of many canine companions through the years, but she was a dog trainer of questionable ability.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Oliver F. Roddey, Jr. (Bo); her son, O. Hunter Roddey and his wife Susan; her daughter, Ann Roddey Bernhardt and her husband Stephen; grandchildren – Harrison Hunter Roddey, Oliver Roddey Bernhardt (Bo), Caroline Amelia Roddey, and Ann Foxworth Bernhardt; her sister, Sara Hunter Wade and her husband Jake; her brother-in-law Frank C. Roddey (Skip) and his wife Nancy; and her first cousins, Helen Hunter Herndon and Ernest B. Hunter, Jr. and his wife Helen. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Meechie is predeceased by her parents; her sister, Marion Hunter Moore and her husband Bill; and her sister-in-law, Jean Roddey Early and her husband Terry.
A service to celebrate Meechie’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. E. Von Clemans officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private.
Memorials may be made to Myers Park Presbyterian Church or to Wing Haven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary.
