Rip was born on October 6, 1930 to Jacob Anthony Quiring and Stella Bigler Quiring in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the youngest of eight children. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Pittsburgh and then went on to earn a chemical engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon University (then “Carnegie Tech”) in 1953. In 1951 Rip met Janet Ann Truitt on a blind date and they were married November 26, 1953. He then served in the United States Army.
Rip spent his entire career of 37 years with Union Carbide and its successors. His job required moving the family around from Fostoria, Ohio; to Sheffield Lake, Ohio; Greenville, South Carolina; Middleburg Heights, Ohio; and back to Greenville, South Carolina where he retired in 1991. Rip and Janet spent 33 years in Greenville, South Carolina before moving to Aldersgate in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2017. He was always a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan but loved living in the South where he rarely had to shovel a driveway of snow.
Rip was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Rip and Janet have five children: Mark Allan Quiring, David Gerard Quiring, Kevin Joseph Quiring, Brian John Quiring, and Beth Quiring Kelly. They have sixteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Rip and Janet were always so proud of their family and traveled the country to be there for important events such as first communions, graduations, and weddings. They would also travel by car just to visit and were a prominent fixture in their grandchildren’s lives.
In addition to the tradition of traveling for family events, Rip and Janet started two significant family traditions in the Quiring family. Taking a summer family vacation was always a priority for them, but in 1987 the family trip settled on going to Ocean Isle Beach, NC and the vacation has been going strong for 36 years, at times topping out at 48 family members attending. Rip loved being with family but he especially loved shelling at 5am low tide at Ocean Isle. It was even better if he could convince a family member to join him. These vacations were filled with lots of love and laughter.
The second family tradition was an annual camping trip. For years Rip would take his sons to Canada to camp and fish. In 1984 Rip made a friendship of a lifetime with Bonnie and Gordon Campbell and the family began camping on their property at Dean Lake, Ontario, Canada. Every summer a group of the Quiring family travels to Canada where Rip loved to fish. Dean Lake was truly his “happy place”.
Rip was passionate about family but he was also passionate about so many things: gardening, picking apples and peaches, watching grandkids’ sporting events, repairing cars, playing black jack, traveling with Janet on cruises, watching horse races, taking vitamins, playing card games and Rummikub with grandkids, diving for beads at Mardi Gras parades in Lafayette, LA and going to Las Vegas with his sons and grandsons.
He was also a faithful Catholic who instilled a strong faith in his children and was generous in so many ways. Rip’s greatest gift was the strong, close, loving family that he and Janet built. We will do our best to walk in his footsteps and carry on his traditions. He is survived by his wife of 69 years and ten months, Janet Ann Quiring; his sons: Mark Quiring (Lynn), David Quiring (Chris), Kevin Quiring (Cindy), Brian Quiring (Cherie), and daughter: Beth Kelly (Rich) and all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
We would like to thank the staff, nurses, and caregivers at Aldersgate for their exceptional care of Rip during his time at Asbury Health and Rehab. Their friendliness and professionalism is greatly appreciated.
