Alice Kuykendall was a long-time resident of Carlyle Drive before moving in with her granddaughter and caregiver Wanda on Tuckaseegee Road as her health declined. She re-united with her parents and husband at the feet of her Heavenly father on August 12, 2017 at Carolina Medical Center-Main. Born September 24, 1932 in Tryon, North Carolina to Emma Wilson Dedman of Augusta GA and Bill Wilson of Lynn, NC, she attended schools in Polk County, NC.
She married Robert Kuykendall on September 18, 1949 and lived in Indiana, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina during his military career, before settling down in Charlotte to raise her family. A graduate of Mercy Medical School of Nursing, she worked for Mercy Hospital for many years as a Certified Nurse Aide before joining Medical Personnel Pool as an in-home caregiver then later as a private caregiver. She retired from Goodwill Industries as a cashier and provided in-home care for her husband until his passing and later for her long-time companion Cecil Rhodes.
Alice enjoyed gardening and sewing for her family as a young home maker. She would sit for hours and cut clothe that she gave to others to create one-of-a-kind quilts. She enjoyed bowling at Freedom Lanes and University Lanes for many years and played senior bingo at various establishments prior to her health declining.
Alice and Robert were early members of West Mecklenburg Baptist Church in Charlotte and continued to worship there until their passings. Her faith in God was evident in all she did and she is now sitting at the Fathers feet, pain-free and whole again.
She is survived by sons, Randy (Debbie) of Dallas, NC, James “Jim” (Karen) of Charlotte, NC, John (Ellen) of Stanfield, NC, Charles (Dena) of Waxhaw and daughter Melinda “Jean” Bell of Charlotte/Troutman, NC; grandchildren, Craig Kuykendall (Donna), Wanda Kuykendall McGinnis (David); Shelly Kuykendall, Matthew and Mikayla Kuykendall, Karrie Bell Norman (Kevin), Wesley Bell and David Timmerman; great grandchildren, Brandon, Caitlyn and Caden Kuykendall, Summer and Valerie McGinnis, Logan and Savana Nelson, Jaxon and Macy Norman ; sisters, Elaine Dedman Bailey (Glen) of Augusta, GA and Lois Miller (Eddie) of Jackson, SC; sister-in-laws, Myrtle Horton of Landrum, SC, Eloise Scott of Thomasville, NC and Joyce Dedman of Columbus, NC as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband, mother, father and brothers, Robert “Bobby” Dedman, Joe Dedman of Tryon NC, Monte Dedman and wife Barbara of Columbus, NC and Ron Dedman (Vonnie) of Augusta, GA
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at 1pm at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home. The funeral will begin at 2pm in the Paul Helton Chapel of Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, Reverend Lester Bledsoe is officiating.
