Katherine "Katie" Burd Wells, of Charleston, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2015, at the age of 76, after a long illness. She was born Oct. 22, 1938, in Wheeling, the daughter of the late Russell C. and Madelyn Burd. Her family moved to Charleston when she was a young child, graduating from Stonewall Jackson High School Class of 1956. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Wells Jr. in 2005; also sister, June Stiles; and sister, Margaretta Long. She is survived by her son, John Wells III (Mimi); daughter, Kathy Wells Levitan (Todd); son, David Wells (Tammy); seven grandchildren, Matt Wells, Jason Wells, Chad Wells, Alex Levitan, Kathryn Levitan, Andrew Wells, and Grant Wells. After high school, Katie worked for the Diamond Dept. Store, until the birth of her first child. After her children were raised, she returned to the work force and was employed at Risk's, working her way up to store manager. She worked at Wells Home Furnishings until her retirement in 2002. Katie's greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. She was loved by many and will be missed by family and friends alike. Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday June 8, at Wilson Funeral Home, 420 Lee St. West, Charleston, with Pastor Bill McCoy officiating. The family will receive family and friends two hours prior to service at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A private family burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston at a later date.
