Rich was born on Sunday, December 24, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. He lived there until he was six when his family moved to Cleveland to be closer to the rest of the family. At 18 years old, Rich met the love of his life, Marianne. Marianne and Rich were married on August 5, 1961 and lived happily together for the remainder of their lives.
Rich worked at Barth Industries for 27 years. Rich worked his way up starting as an inspector and then in sales before opening his own sales office.
Rich enjoyed traveling, woodworking and playing golf. He is remembered as a compassionate man who jumped in the water to save a drowning woman in spite of his inability to swim; as the proud owner of a 1996 Lincoln Continental Towncar; as a sentimental man who would tear up upon hearing the first few notes of the Ave Maria or upon talking with family – even over the phone; as a fun-loving man who enjoyed the company of friends and a Crown on the rocks; as a jokester, who – even in his final days – was making the nurses who cared for him laugh; as a hard worker, who worked his way to the top of his field; as a friend who brightened every get-together; as a story-teller who never let the facts get in the way of a good story; as a wood worker who crafted beautiful things which occupy the homes of his love ones; as a loving husband, father, and Papa who enjoyed spending time with his family; as a light in the lives of all who were lucky enough to know him.
