He graduated from Melbourne High in 1969 and then from The University of Florida in 1973. He was a claims adjuster/supervisor for 50 years. Michael was a Florida gators enthusiast and pulled for them any chance he had. His next love was cooking. He was always cooking for his family or a crowd. He spent many hours outside with the smoker or on the grill preparing more food than anyone could eat. Michael loved being a grandfather and loved spending weekends with his grandchildren swimming in the pool or playing kitchen. Michael’s favorite pastime was golf and he did it often for many years.
He is survived by his wife, of 43 years, Karen Smith of Chapin; daughter, Alexandra “Ali” Burley (Chase) of Chapin; son, Christopher Smith (Stephanie) of Gaston; and his grandchildren, Cooper, Madelynn, Savannah, Gabriel, and Mary.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Vicky.
A visitation for Michael will be held Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Chapin Chapel, 123 Columbia Ave, Chapin, South Carolina 29036, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM.
