Thomas Best Gibson Henderson II, who went by the name Gib, passed away on Tuesday, December 2021 after a strong fight with lung cancer. Gib was surrounded by his family, and passed peacefully. He was 70 years old, and has lived in Phoenix, Arizona since 1974, over 40 years with his family.
Gib was born on September 19th, 1951 to William and Zuma Henderson. He graduated in 1973 with a degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University and was a proud boilermaker! After graduation, he relocated to Arizona in 1974 and he began working as a pilot. Then, in 1978, he began working with Airborne Express, ABX. He received his Captain’s certification in 1986, and remained a captain with ABX, which later became DHL, until he retired at 60. His 38 year career took him everywhere, but his favorite place to be was home with his girls, his family.
He met his wife, Cheryl, in 1981, and they were married November 3rd, 1984. They had two daughters, Taylor in 1986, Cassie in 1989. After retiring in 2011, Gib spent his time enjoying life with his family and friends. He would often be seen with the family dog, Sunny, driving around in his blue mini van. Gib was someone that would show up for anyone, at any time, if there was a need. He was reliable, humble, kind and generous, but first and foremost, he was a father, and proud to be a family man. He loved to golf, and he loved to enjoy good food and a good Budweiser whenever the moment allowed. He became a grandfather to Charles, in April of 2021, and loved every moment of it.
Gib is survived by his wife, Cheryl Lee; his children and their families; Cassandra & Shawn Smith, Taylor & Christopher Ferranti; his grandson, Charles Ferranti. He will be forever cherished, loved, and missed.
At this time, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Association or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
