Reyes Mendoza Vender, 91 passed away peacefully on July 17, 2019. Reyes was born on January 6, 1928 in Jerome, Arizona. He was one of seven siblings and was preceded in death by his parents, Esperanza & Gustavo Vender, brothers George, Raul, Gustavo, Ricardo, Fernando, sister, Monica (Quiroz) and loving wife of 36 years, Alicia (Coronado).
He attended Superior High School where he excelled as a student, athlete and leader. He enlisted in the US Navy and was on active duty during WWII. After the war, he and his wife settled in Superior, AZ where they raised their five children. He was employed by Magma Mine in Superior, AZ and was later named the Western District Program Manager for the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) where he retired in 1987.
Mr. Vender moved to Camp Verde, AZ and spent his glorious days of retirement as an active member of the American Legion for 27 years; serving as the Commander at Post 25 in Cottonwood, AZ from 1995-1998. On February 20, 2016, friends, family and local dignitaries joined the American Legion Post 25 to celebrate Mr. Vender’s tireless efforts and contributions to the American Legion, Veterans and their families during “Reyes Vender Night”.
Mr. Vender was known for his fantastic sense of humor, charm, ability to make people smile, witty sayings, funny jokes, love for rocks, gems, arts, crafting and his precious bolo ties. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was loved deeply and will be missed dearly.
Mr. Vender is survived by his five children, Josephine Ronstadt (Jose), Reyes (Betty), Monica Corr (Tim), Irene Steadman (Alex), Virginia Duarte (Louie), 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 11am, reception at Phoenix Marriott Resort Tempe at The Buttes to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
