The daughter of Rob and Maggie Jobe, Mary Elizabeth (Jobe) Roberts was born June 4,
1928 in Covington, TN. She spent her childhood and school years in the same area, active in
clubs and sports, especially proud to be a member of a three time champion basketball team at
Byars Hall High School. After graduating from Byars Hall in 1946, she married her high school
sweetheart, Don Eugene “Gene” Roberts in 1947.
Blessed with two daughters in the years that followed, the family of four moved to Chandler,
AZ in 1956. Elizabeth supported her husband’s work and volunteered in her girls’ schools and
activities. She was also involved in their church, eventually landing at First Presbyterian Church
of Chandler, serving in Sunday School, choir, numerous committees, and the Board of Deacons.
She first worked in Chandler at J.C. Penney before beginning a 27 year career for the
Chandler Unified School District. Her primary role in the schools was as
secretary/administrative assistant at Chandler Junior High School, followed by the same role in
the opening year of Andersen Junior High School before retiring. Numerous students, teachers,
administrators and parents speak highly of her kindness, professionalism and integrity.
