Lee Rodgers passed away Nov. 3 of natural causes. He was 89 years old and was affectionately known to many as “Red”.
Lee was born Nov. 22, 1920 in Seattle, Washington. At an early age he was adopted by Harry and Inez Rodgers and raised on a small farm in Alderwood Manor, WA.
He attended Edmonds High School and graduated in 1938. In May of 1938 he enlisted in the Army at Ft. Lewis, WA and was discharged in 1946. He worked for the Veterans Administration until 1947 when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and later the United States Air Force.
Lee served his country for thirty-two years and fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He received over twenty-seven ribbons and medals including the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star.
After retiring in Chandler, AZ in 1972, he went to work for the post office for nine years.
Lee was also a big sports enthusiast. He officiated and umpired at the high school, college and military levels.
Lee found great enjoyment in being a member of the VFW Post 7401 and American Legion. In the VFW he was active in leadership and took great pride in being a “cootie” and serving retired veterans.
He is survived by his sister, Ann Shope, his daughter, Carly Ferguson, son and daughter-in-law, Skip and Lee Ann Rodgers, his first wife, Beverly Rodgers, four grand children, Whizzer and Joelle Ille, Lucy and Carly Rodgers, and three great-grand children, Brittany and Kristen Ille, and Brooke Paget. His second wife, Julia, precedes him in death.
The memorial service is Monday, November 8, visitation is 9:00-9:30am, funeral at 9:30am, at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary, 10940 E. Chandler Heights Rd., Chandler, AZ 85248.
