LARRY L. KINNAMON, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2011, after a long struggle with cancer. Larry was born on, September 14, 1934, to John & Mary Kinnamon, in Bloomfield, Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; granddaughter Kylee Kinnamon of Las Cruces, New Mexico, who is a student at NMSU; brother Dan Kinnamon of Omaha, Nebraska; and sister, Ann Henry of West Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Bloomfield High School, 1952, where he was active in sports and speech. Larry graduated from Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa, where he was a member of the TKE fraternity, in 1956. He married Roberta McIntire on June 17, 1956, in Fairfield, Iowa.
Larry and Roberta lived in Clinton, Iowa, for 20 years where he was a managing partner of Brown’s Shoefit Company Shoe Store. While living there he was active in numerous civic organizations: Rotary Club, Jaycees, Clinton Chamber of Commerce (serving one term as President), President of United Way Fund Drive, and Commodore of the Clinton River Boat Days. They were members of the Clinton First Presbyterian Church, and served as leaders of the Couples’ Lifeliner Club. There he was a Deacon Elder, and on the Board of the Session. Larry was also a member of the Elks Club, and always enjoyed the game of bridge throughout his life. Larry and Roberta were members of the Clinton Country Club for 15 years where he served one term on the Board of Directors.
In 1980, Larry chose to buy into the Brown’s Shoefit Company store in Farmington, New Mexico, and became owner/manager for four years. There he was active in the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the San Juan Country Club for five years. He also served on the Board of the Session of Farmington’s First Presbyterian Church. Larry was an avid bird hunter with the family’s two beloved Labrador retrievers, and was considered a great fisherman. Larry and Roberta always enjoyed many travel trips during their year together.
Larry retired from Brown’s Shoefit Company in 1984. Then the opportunity came to join the Huggins Shoe Company to work and train in the Newport Beach, California, store. He became manager/partner of the Huggins Shoe Store in Pasadena, California, from 1984-1988. They resided in Bradbury, California, where they were members of the City of Hope Couples’ Auxiliary in Duarte. Larry and Roberta were members of Monrovia’s Presbyterian Church. During this time Larry was also a member of the Pasadena Rotary Club.
In 1988, Larry decided to buy the Huggins Shoe Store in the Biltmore Fashion Park, Phoenix, Arizona. They soon formed their own corporation (KEI) and the store was known as Kinnamon Shoes for nine years. Larry was a member of the Scottsdale Rotary Club, and was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Paradise Valley, where they sang with the choir for five years. Larry and Roberta retired in 1995, and moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona, in 1996.
In retirement Larry was very busy. He enjoyed golfing; singing every Thursday morning at Hawthorne Court and karaoke with his friends. He also enjoyed being a member of Risen Savior Lutheran Church’s choir. Larry served on the IronOaks Phase 3 HOA Board for one year in Sun Lakes. He was loved and appreciated in life by all his family and friends, and will be missed. A Memorial Service will be held, Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Risen Savior Lutheran Church at 23914 S. Alma School Road, Chandler, Arizona 85248.
