Edith (McCall) Brown passed away on Dec 17, 2022 following a short illness, after breaking hip earlier in November. Edith was born on August 26, 1933 in Abingdon, Va. She is predeceased by her husband (Robert Brown), mother (Irene McCall), father (William McCall), sisters Virginia (McCall) Gray, Anne (McCall) Snap, and Boots (McCall) Tillison and brothers Earl McCall, Jimmy McCall.
Edith leaves behind two sons - Eric and Neil and her grandson Ted. She is survived by her brother William McCall Jr and sisters Mary (McCall) Mitchell and Esther (McCall) Rhodes and many nieces and nephews.
Edith grew up on her family’s dairy farm in Abingdon, Va. As part of a dairy family, Edith was expected to help milk their 108 Holstein cows and also do all the chores/jobs that a dairy farm required. It was during that time that she started her curiosity about plants. Her knowledge of flora and fauna was huge - rarely could I ask her about a plant without her knowing what it was. Eventually, she moved to Albuquerque, where she met her husband to be, Robert Brown, who was in the Air Force at that time. They eventually moved to Massachusetts, where he worked as a machinist and Edith worked as a secretary. After over 35 years there, they decided to retire and move out to Arizona. During her early years here in Sun Lakes, my mom and dad loved to go on week-end trips all over Arizona and the southwest. She also used to love to oil paint and cross stitch (but arthritis took this away about 15 years ago). But her lasting love was collecting marbles, enjoying the colors and shapes within marbles.
She is saddened to leave her close friends Peggy, Cari who both loved her as if she were their own mother/sister. The family also wants to remember the wonderful neighbors my mom had though her years at Sun Lakes. We would also like to thank the outstanding support we received from Hospice and in particular, Julie who was one of the kindest people I have known. Last, we want to thank her long time care giver Pamela Geans. Pamela provided such outstanding care and love to my mom, and I know she is one of the reasons my mom lived so well for so long.
A private service will be held at Valley of the Sun in Chandler on December, 27th at 11:00, Edith will be laid to rest with her husband Robert Brown at the VA National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona on December 28.
In lieu of flowers, food, etc. the family is requesting donations be made to the National Heart Association or National Kidney Foundation.
