He was born in Dubuque, Iowa on July 25, 1918 to parents Clarence and Etta Mae Peterson. He grew up in Dubuque and attended the University of Dubuque, where he majored in Math and Chemistry. He graduated with a Bachelors in Chemistry from the University of Dubuque. After graduating from college, he enrolled in the pilot training program at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. He was assigned to the Royal Air Force before the US became involved in World War II. After serving honorably in the US Navy during World War II, he stayed in the reserves until 1957.
He married Jewel (Hall) in 1947 and they remained committed until her passing in 1991. They had three daughters: Susan, Judy and Shari along with Jewel's kids, Michael and Patricia
In 1993 he married Patti Spurry.
Bob loved all sports, but, especially liked golf, tennis and fishing, for which he was active into his 90's.
He is survived by his 5 children, 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild
