Darryl Burnett, 58, of Chandler, Arizona, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2019. He was born on September 14, 1960 in Fresno, California. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1977 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1999. His specialty was Hazardous Material Management.
In December of 2004 Darryl started working for Banner Medical Center as the Inventory Coordinator. He played a key role in the opening of Banner Gateway Medical Center in 2007 followed by M D Anderson Cancer Center in 2011. Darryl was the Materials Analyst or the “go to guy” at Gateway as his ability to “get it done” was no secret among the hospital staff.
Darryl married the love his of life, Sheri Malchow, on April 27,2012 on Magic Island in Honolulu, Hawaii. They enjoyed a life full of adventure and always lived up to his motto: Life is Good!
Together they enjoyed golfing at many of the local courses throughout the valley. Darryl had his first ace on September 21, 2008 at Toka Sticks Golf Club on the 185-yard Par 3 #17. In addition to that hole in one, he had three more aces during the charity event held each year at San Marcos Golf Club.
As well as his love of golf, Darryl and Sheri enjoyed many weekends away on the search for minerals and fossils. Many of you have probably seen or even acquired some of his treasures as he was always excited to talk and teach about his passion of rocks.
On September 12, 2018, Darryl was diagnosed with Stage 4 small cell lung cancer. He didn’t let cancer bring him down as he continued to fight this beast with optimism and determination. Unfortunately, on April 4, at 1 am he took his last breath. His wife, Sheri, and daughter, Beverly and son in law Josh were by his side.
He is survived by his wife, Sheri; three daughters, Stacy (Tommy) Burnett of Chesterfield, VA, Beverly (Josh) Willis of Chesterfield, VA and Rochelle Burnett of Holiday, FL; three granddaughters, Breauna, Sadie and Chelsea and one grandson, Bryson; his father William; two brothers Robert and David, three nieces and one nephew and many cousins. He was proceeded in death by his mother, Laura Walker Burnett.
Services will be held at Valley of the Sun Chapel on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 10:00 am with graveside services to follow.
