Susan Pettigrew Schell

Susan Pettigrew Schell passed away peacefully on Friday, August 6, 2021 at the age of 77. She was the beloved mother of Anthony J. Schell Jr. (Tammy) and the late Steven K. Schell (Diane). Daughter of the late Herbert Pettigrew Jr. and Elise Keith Pettigrew. Sister of Bill Pettigrew (Renee’) and the late Herbert Pettigrew III (Rosemary), George Pettigrew (Susan), Pat Pettigrew (Elizabeth) and Cathy Ripps (Craig). Proud grandmother of Chad Schell (Erin), Amy Wilson, Paul Hammers, Gabriel Schell, Gabby Eschette and the late Kelli Schell. Great grandmother of Jamy Wilson, Willow Wilson, John Wilson Jr., Hannah Tyrney, Levi Lee, Logan Schell and Olivia Schell. She is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and especially her adopted daughter Jamie and Tony Lee.

Susan was born in New Orleans, LA and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish before settling in Independence, LA. Susan was devoted to her church and enjoyed volunteering her time to assist with the many activities they sponsored. She thoroughly enjoyed a serious passion for sending out handwritten cards on many occasions every month – if you were on her calendar for an occasion, you always received a card. When not busy dropping cards in the mail, Susan truly enjoyed life through her simple pleasures of oyster po-boys, making the best grilled cheese sandwiches and cooking her amazing food for Thanksgiving. She will always be remembered for her dedication to her family, her caring and loving spirit, her laughter, and spoiling the grandchildren. She was a wonderful example of what it means to care for others and will be deeply missed by us all.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Monday, August 16th from 11:00AM – 1:00PM, followed by a funeral service in Susan’s memory beginning at 1:00PM. She will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens. Due to COVID-19, face masks and social distancing are required.
