Louis Joseph Smith Jr. passed away peacefully in Ocala, FL on November 20, 2023 at the age of 77. Louis was born on October 25, 1946 in New Orleans, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Lange Smith and Louis Joseph Smith Sr. Louis is survived by his sister Linda S. Merwin and his nieces and nephew, Dana Wineski (Robert), Stacy Nunez, Darrin Merwin (Susan) and Stephanie Harper. He is also fondly remembered by his great-nephews and nieces, Robert (Allison), Daniel (Cathryn), Bailey (Shine), Clayton, Caroline, Sarah, Sophia and Abby, along with his great-great nephews and niece Charles, Lucy, William and John Paul.
Louis leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and a passion for life. He spent the majority of his adult years in New Jersey, where he cultivated deep and meaningful friendships that endured the test of time. Upon retirement, Louis relocated to Ocala, FL, where he continued to build strong connections with a community of friends who cherished his company, and continued to indulge in his lifelong love for racehorses and the exhilarating atmosphere of the racetrack. His dedication to these magnificent creatures extended beyond mere admiration; for over 30 years, Louis served as a valued employee of Marsh McLennan, insuring and safeguarding the well-being of the horses he cared for.
Louis was a proud member of the Louisiana Horsemen Breeders Association, a testament to his enduring passion for the equestrian world. Beyond his professional pursuits, he was deeply committed to making a positive impact on the world by supporting various charities, including the American Heart Association.
Known for his good nature and generous heart, Louis was a beacon of kindness to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Whether it was offering a helping hand to those in need or spreading joy through his infectious laughter, Louis left an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
Louis will be dearly missed by his family and friends, who will forever cherish the memories of his vibrant spirit and the love he shared with those around him. As we bid farewell to a remarkable individual, please join us in celebrating his legacy and the enduring impact he had on the hearts of many.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, February 3rd from 10:00AM – 12:00PM, followed by a Memorial Mass in memory of Louis beginning at 12:00PM. He will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
