Loretta Stephens was the daughter of Frank Fernandez a native of the Province of Galicia Spain and Martha Guerra a descendent of the Canary lsland immigrants who settled in St. Bernard Parish. Loretta was one of nine children born and raised in St. Bernard Parish. Her father and uncles were commercial fisherman and trappers who made their living off the abundant natural bounty in costal St. Bernard Parish. Growing up on the bayou instilled a love of the water and nature that has followed Loretta her entire life.
Loretta attended public schools in St. Bernard Parish and business school where her skills led her to the employment as a clerical assistant in various businesses in New Orleans area. Loretta's love of people led her to the medical field where she trained as a medical assistant. During the course of her service as a medical assistant she worked for several prominent physicians in the New Orleans area. She dedicated 15 years of her career to working as a medical assistant to Dr. William D. Wolf, coroner of St. Bernard Parish.
Along the way Loretta helped thousands of people through difficult times of illness and loss and made hundreds of friends.
Loretta married William Dudley Stephens. Bill was the love of Loretta's life. He was as devoted and loving to Loretta as she was to him. Loretta had four children Jack, Mary Ann, Stephanie, and Juanita. She had three grandchildren Justin, Barrett, Brittany, and Meaghan. She had two great grandchildren Payton and Riley.
Loretta was known as a devoted mother and wife who enjoyed reading, watching the Saints on TV and following current affairs particularly politics.
Loretta is survived by her son Jack Antonio Stephens, daughter in law Desiree. Her Grandchildren Justin William Stephens, Barrett Robert Stephens, Brittany Cookmeyer Tanner (Mark), Meaghan Alyson Jeansonne. Her great grandchildren, Payton Alyse Tanner and Riley Evan Tanner.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2805 Bayou Rd., St. Bernard, LA on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will begin at 12:00 PM. She will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
