Joseph Charles Roman, Jr., born March 28, 1934, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024 at the age of 89 in Baton Rouge, LA. He was born in New Orleans and lived most of his life in Chalmette, relocating to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina. He was the son of the late Joseph C. Roman, Sr. and the late Carrie Klein Roman Ryall, and brother of the late George A. Roman and the late Molly Lu Roman Toups. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Billlie Bourg Roman and was the father of Patricia Roman Earhart (Bobby), Joseph C. Roman, III (Judy), Pamela Roman Mascari (Brian) and the late Bradley J. Roman; grandfather of Chris Earhart (Daynell), Alana Earhart Barnett-Woods (Chris), Vincent Roman (Kayla), Gerard Roman (Alyssa), Katherine Mascari, Peter Mascari and Andrew Mascari; great grandfather of Noah and Chloe Earhart, Carter Barnett-Woods, Luke, Camille, and Kolton Roman. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Doris Bourg Creger and Barbara Bourg Capdepon (Charles).
He also leaves behind many friends and relatives from Chalmette, the St. Bernard Club (people displaced all over Louisiana by Hurricane Katrina), St. Thomas More in Baton Rouge, and residents of Williamsburg Senior Living.
He was a ’51 graduate of Warren Easton High and after 4 years in the Navy working as a Petty Officer in electronics, he came home while working for Western Union, he graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from Tulane University. After a brief time at the Michoud Chrysler Aerospace facility, he went to work for the Department of the Navy and became Business Review Manager for the Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Algiers until he retired in 1994.
He was a proud member of the DAV (Chalmette, then the Baton Rouge Chapter), VFW (founding member of the Arabi Chapter, followed by the Baton Rouge Chapter), and the American Legion Post 0401. He also was very active as a member of the Holy Cross High School parents club and served as President of the Cabrini Dads’ Club.
Services will be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home (701 Virtue St, Chalmette, LA) on February 2, 2024, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. followed by a Catholic Burial Mass at noon. Interment with military honors will follow immediately at St. Bernard Gardens.
