Janie Hughes Onellion Mizes passed away peacefully on Friday, January 29, 2021 at the age of 75. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her memorable life. She was the cherished wife of the late Phillip C. Onellion. Loving mother of Amii Onellion Peri and Kristian Mizes-Tan (Sarah). Daughter of the late Malcolm Edward Hughes and Jeanne B. LeBlanc Hughes. Sister of Carolyn Hughes Conrad Arceneaux, David Hughes (Rita Millican) and Scot Hughes. Sister-in-law of Brenda Couvillier Onellion, Mary Margaret Onellion Seale, Patrick Onellion (Debbie) and Timothy Onellion. Proud grandmother of Zane Orleans Peri. Godmother of Lisa Conrad Berry & Mikayla Berry. She is also survived and fondly remembered by Kevin Peri, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Janie was born in New Orleans, LA and was a long-time resident of Chalmette, LA. A graduate of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, she won a competitive full tuition scholarship to Annunciation Catholic Girls' High School in New Orleans where she graduated as Co-Valedictorian with her best friend & future sister-in-law, Judy Jorns Zimmerman. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from LSUNO.
She enjoyed many occupations throughout her life as a teacher, working for the phone company, co-owned Rick’s Pancake Cottage for several years, participated in computer education sales with Apple and served as a Realtor in her later years. When she wasn’t busy with work, she truly enjoyed life through her simple pleasures of gardening, dancing to her favorite tunes, caring for her cats, tirelessly participating in her children’s activities with their sports, dancing and swimming. She loved the company of her family and friends and was rarely seen without a camera in her hand at family events. She found pleasure in the details of everyday life and cared deeply for others. Janie will always be remembered for her loyalty and dedication to her family, her caring and loving spirit, her social nature and her laughter. She was a wonderful example of what it means to care for others and will be deeply missed by us all.
Special thanks and appreciation to the staff of The Azaleas Assisted Living apartments at Woldenberg Village where she lived for over 2 ½ years.
A Memorial Service in Janie’s memory will be held at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, 2320 Paris Rd., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, February 20th. She will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
